How to Deactivate FASTag Account – Quick & Simple Guide 2025

If you’re planning to sell your vehicle or transfer ownership, you’re going to want to deactivate your FASTag account. This will apply also if you want to scrap an old car or hold off using it for a long time.

Remember, if this tag stays active toll deductions will continue to happen using your original account. Also, any new owner can’t get their own FASTag until you’ve closed yours.

In this blog, we’ll explore quick and easy ways in which you can deactivate your FASTag.

1. Use the NHAI Helpline

The easiest – and most universal – method for all FASTag users to rely on is to call the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) helpline at 1033.

  • Dial the digits 1033 from your registered mobile number.
  • IVR prompts will pop up. Follow them to select “FASTag closure/deactivation.”
  • Input your FASTag ID – or car registration – once you’re prompted.
  • SMS or email confirmation will take some time to arrive.

Such deactivation at the NHAI level will help you avoid unnecessary toll deductions. This is regardless of the wallet provider or issuing bank.

2. Access the Issuer’s Online Portal

How Refunds are Processed for FASTag Cancellation

First, use your issuer’s portal or helpline to check your FASTag balance. Submitting a refund request is typically part of the closure process.

Share your bank details securely where needed for this task. Any and all refunds usually take 7-15 working days. Depending on the issuer and circumstances, this timeline can vary.

You will need to keep an eye on your account or app for any transaction receipts and status updates.

What Documents are Needed for FASTag Account Closing

You should be ready to submit the following documents:

  • Government-issued photo ID (Aadhar card, driver’s license, passport).
  • Vehicle registration document (RC book copy).
  • Cancelled cheque or bank account details (for timely refund).
  • Written request or prescribed closure form (applicable to certain banks only).

FASTag Account Closure: Best Practices & General Timeline

  • Make sure to deactivate your account before selling or scrapping your vehicle. This will prevent unwanted deductions from your account/funds.
  • Hold on to any closure acknowledgments (SMS, email) until your refunds are fully credited.
  • Physically remove the FASTag sticker after deactivation is confirmed to further avoid accidental charges.
  • If you want to reuse FASTag after a break of six months or more, you can request temporary deactivation and future reactivation via your issuer’s customer care.

With these swift and simple guidelines, you can experience seamless FASTag account closure, not to forget punctual refunds.
