Mahindra Thar sales cross 2 lakh
The Mahindra Thar has achieved a significant milestone by crossing the 2,00,000-unit sales in the Indian market.
Notably, Thar has achieved this milestone in a little over 4 years following the Roxx’s launch in August.

The lifestyle off-road genre was once regarded as a dying segment. It was Mahindra Thar in 2020 that revived this segment and has ever since been on the rise. The second-generation Mahindra Thar got off to a flying start with incredible numbers and a significantly high waiting period, both due to the lockdown as well as a massive order book.

Demand has accelerated with the recent launch of the five-door Thar Roxx, and the two models’ cumulative April-October 2024 dispatches of 42,726 units are already 65% of FY2024’s 65,246 units. M&M is well set to achieve total sales of 500,000 SUVs for the first time in FY2025.
Built-in sales of Rs. 10,000 a month are projected for the Thar family in fiscal 2026, with upside risks. M&M’s Thar targets of being number one may require it to sell 15,000 to 18,000 units per month, Nomura said.
The broking maintains that the company’s SUV sales can grow by 15% annually over fiscal 2024–2027.
M&M has a market share of 27% in the Rs 12.5 lakh-SUV segment, and it is aiming to make the ‘Thar’ brand number one in this category, according to Moran Stanley.
The current-generation Mahindra Thar was launched in 2020 and combines strong road presence with a punchy engine, smooth transmission, and some serious off-road capability. While the Thar is offered with rear-wheel drive as standard, the 4×4 version is offered as an option for those who enjoy off-road challenges.
Mahindra Thar is one of the most popular 4×4 SUVs in the country. Since launch, the Thar has been in demand in India, with waiting periods extending to 6 months. The Mahindra Thar exterior design is an evolution of the original Willys Jeep.
The Mahindra Thar is available in both 4×4 and 4×2 configurations, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine or a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine. The petrol variant offers 150 bhp, while the diesel version delivers 130 bhp, both available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
The 4×2 Thar, meanwhile, includes a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 116 bhp, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, along with the same petrol engine as the 4×4 model.
India’s SUV market has been heating up in the last few years as customers move towards premium segments with rising disposable income.
