Volvo EX 30 India launch confirmed by end of the year
Volvo confirmed plans to bring the small EV to India back in July 2024 with the SUV expected to be joined by Volvo’s flagship EX90 at a later date.
The EX30 is Volvo’s smallest new-gen electric vehicle in global markets and is due to arrive in India by the end of 2025. The Volvo EX30 will be placed below the XC40 Recharge and will be the third model in Volvo’s electric plans in India.
The Volvo EX30 is based on the Geely SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform that’s developed to spawn a range of subcompact electric car models across the group’s brands.

Volvo EX 30 Design

The EX30 has a design identity similar to that of the EX90, which was unveiled last year. It features a blanked-off grille with a Volvo badge, Thor’s hammer-inspired LED headlights, and a blacked-out front bumper at the front.
On the sides, it gets up to 20-inch aerodynamically designed alloy wheels and black-painted A-, B-, C- pillars and roof.
At the rear, there are connected LED tail lights, which are inspired by the long units present on Volvo’s flagship electric SUV like the EX90, having a C-shape appearance.

Volvo EX 30 Interior

On the inside, the EX30 offers Volvo’s traditional design form, with the dashboard dominated by a 12.3-inch vertically mounted touchscreen. The infotainment runs Volvo’s Google-based system, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Clever touches include drawer-style cupholders built into the front armrest, a centred glove compartment and the use of recycled textile material for the upholstery.
key features of the EX30 include dual-zone auto climate control, wireless phone charging, powered front seats, 360-degree cameras and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Safety remains a key focus area for Volvo, with the EX30 packing front and side airbags, alcohol lock software, ISOFIX child seat anchors and a driver alert system. Also part of the entry-level SUV are advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, front and rear cross traffic alert with autobrake, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and departure warning, pedestrian and cyclist steering avoidance, auto high-beam and traffic jam assist.

Volvo EX 30 Battery Pack and Range

In the international market, Volvo offers the EX30 in three variants.

EX30 might come to India via CKD route

Moreover, Volvo might consider local assembly (CKD route) to ensure the EX30 remains accessible to Indian consumers. Volvo started completely knocked down (CKD) operations in 2017. The Volvo cars are assembled at the company’s Hoskote plant near Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Apart from BEVs, it sells internal combustion engine (ICE) models like the XC60 SUV, XC90 SUV and S90 sedan.

Volvo EX30 has lowest carbon footprint among its EV lineup

The upcoming EX30 electric SUV possesses the smallest carbon footprint of any fully electric Volvo car to date. According to Volvo’s life cycle assessment (LCA), it has a total carbon footprint of 23 tonnes per 200,000 km which is approximately 60 percent less than the petrol-powered XC40.
The carbon footprint report identifies the key contributing materials and processes to the car’s emissions, Volvo said. Exclusively focused on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the report covers the car’s lifecycle, starting with the extraction and refining of raw materials and ending with the car’s end-of-life.
According to Volvo, the proportion of recycled materials in the EX30 is the highest of any Volvo car so far. Around one-quarter of the aluminum and almost one-fifth of the steel is recycled material. In addition, around 17% of all plastics within the car, from interior components to exterior bumpers, are made from recycled material.

Volvo’s EV plan and expansion in India

Volvo is one of the few major automotive OEMs which has been very vocal about the need to transition into battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs). The Swedish carmaker is focussed on becoming a fully-electric brand by the end of this decade.
Moreover, Volvo has also confirmed that the EX90 will follow the EX30 in the Indian market. Persson elaborated on Volvo’s strategy, stating, “We have a very clear strategy to launch one new BEV product every year. The next two are SUVs, but further down the line, there could be other body types.” He also projected faster growth for the Indian market compared to the rest of the region, predicting quicker electrification in the premium segment over the mass market.
Volvo Cars India aims to cater to the luxury segment, where EV penetration is higher. Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director of Volvo Car India, highlighted the company’s 22-23% share in the luxury EV market, which is expected to grow with new model introductions.
The Swedish carmaker is also evaluating the potential for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) as transitional products towards full electrification, considering government taxation policies on hybrids.
