BYD unveils 1,000V ‘Super E-Platform’ capable of fast charging 400km in 5 minutes

BYD has unveiled a new system for electric cars that is capable of providing 470 kilometers of range in 5 minutes. Not just theoretically. The first models sporting the new technology can already be pre-ordered in China.
The company has unveiled its new electrification platform, which it calls the “Super e-Platform,” with the core consisting of blade batteries that support ultra-fast charging, high-performance electric motors, and a new generation of silicon carbide power chip.
BYD Chairman and Founder Wang Chuanfu introduced the company’s new “super e-platform,” capable of peak charging speeds of 1,000 kilowatts (kW) — double that of Tesla’s latest Superchargers. During tests on BYD’s new Han L sedan, the platform delivered a game-changing five-minute charge, bringing electric refueling times in line with traditional gasoline fill-ups.

BYD calls the batteries used in the platform flash-charge batteries, saying it has a 10 C charging multiplier, the highest of any mass-produced power battery in the world.
Notably, the 10 C charging rate capability is the highest of any battery currently mass-produced. The ‘C’ is an indicator of the ratio of battery size to charging power. With 1C, an 80 kWh battery can be charged with a maximum of 80 kW. At 5C, the same battery can theoretically be charged with five times the charging power – i.e. up to 400 kW.

Moreover, to help support the new architecture, BYD will be rolling out it’s own 1,000 V capable charging network and aims to deliver the new platform’s full potential at these sites, increasing access to thousands of ultra-fast charging stations across China.
Alongside that, it’s also announced the latest electric motor technology for its future EV line up, which will have e-motors that can spin at speeds of over 30,000 rpm, the highest of any production vehicle.
The Super e-Platform not only represents a breakthrough in charging technology but also comprehensively upgrades and deeply integrates core EV components such as motors, batteries, and battery management systems.

BYD is the best-selling brand in China, accounting for roughly a third of all EV sales in the country. Last year, the company overtook Tesla to become the world’s largest EV manufacturer.
The Chinese EV giant’s growing presence in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America suggests the technology will eventually reach global markets, though likely at higher price points reflecting import duties and market positioning.
BYD reported it made just over 4.3 million “new energy vehicles” last year, up 41% from a year earlier, including 1.8 million battery electric vehicles and 2.5 million plug in hybrids.
