Maharashtra Government Extends the last date of HSRP Number Plate

Maharashtra Transport Department has once again extended the deadline set for affixing high security Registration Plates (HSRP) has been extended till June 30, 2025. This decision comes after only 18 lakh vehicles have been fitted with HSRP Number Plate so far, despite the government’s push to make them mandatory.

“The pace of installations of the HSRP Number Plate has been found slow and hence, we are extending the deadline till 30 June, 20205,” Maharashtra transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar said.

Citizens have been asked to upgrade number plates and affix HSRP Number Plates for all old vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. As per the SOP, the onus will be on the vehicle owner for getting HSRP installed by June 30, 2025. Enforcement authorities (Regional Transport Offices and police) have been authorised to take legal action and impose fines for non-compliance under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, after the expiry of the June 2025 deadline.

HSRP Number Plates are licensed plates designed to curb theft and other fradulent activities related to vehicle identification through enhanced security features. New vehicles already have HSRP installed. But vehicles registered before 2019 will have to get this plate installed separately.

The HSRP Numer Plate has a 10-digit unique laser-branded ID number and laser-etched code. Due to this this plate is tamper-proof. It is made of rare aluminum alloy and has IND badging, on which the hologram of Ashok Chakra is hot-stamped. In addition, the plate has a reflective film on which “INDIA” is imprinted.

The Transport Department has also clarified that only HSRP Number Plates from authorised vendors will be recognised and updated on the VAHAN portal. Vehicles with unofficial plates will face a fine of ₹1,000 under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
