Tata Motors Still Leads the EV Market Sales amidst Rising Competition
India is witnessing the increased popularity of electric cars, and the Tata Motors electric car sales 2025 proves the point with cars sales by the company. However, a little bit the situation has changed in 2025. Tata still leads in India EV market share but the victors are gaining on fast. Let’s have a closer look at what is going on.

Tata’s Electric Car Sales: Strong But Slipping

As many as 64,530 electric cars were sold by Tata in financial year 2024 (April 2023 to March 2024) which comprised to more than 70% of the electric cars sold in India. In other words, it meant that almost 70 percent of the electric cars on Indian roads were Tata’s, including some of the popular ones, such as Tata Nexon EV.
Nevertheless, in the financial year 2025 (April 2024 to March 2025), the sales of electric cars at Tata declined by around 10.7% and sold approximately 57,600 cars. They also lost market share( from 70.5% to 53.5%). This means the grip of Tata on the market is not as strong as before even though they continue to be the biggest market player in the Indian electric vehicle market trends.
One of the reasons that account for this decline is reduced demand from fleet operators (companies which purchase cars in bulk for taxis or rentals). The fleet side as said by Tata’s Vice president of finance, Dhiman Gupta, had less activity, which impacted sales particularly in the fleet electric vehicles India industry.

Competition Is Heating Up

While Tata continues to lead the segment in the affordable electric cars India under ₹12 lakh, with a share of more than 75%, softening up of competition is expected. That is where many people come and purchase their first electric car for city use.
But it is in ₹12-20 lakh bracket where the competition thickens. Tata’s share in this market is about 30-33% and this segment is very important as the major chunk of their sales are from this segment.

What’s Coming Next for Tata?

In order to maintain the lead, Tata is planning to bring two new electric SUVs in the market.

  • Tata Sierra.ev product launch will be expected at the end of 2025. It’s a cool looking SUV that is likely to be priced less than 20lakhs for base versions but most of them will command a price tag of over 20lakhs.
  • Tata Harrier.ev price will be much more than ₹20 lakh. It was supposed to be launched in March 2025 however, it has been delayed.
These new models will aid Tata to compete in the higher price segments and win customers who are after more luxury and features.

Reducing the Difference in the Price for EVs from Petrol cars

Tata is also doing its best in terms of making electric cars affordable, and particularly in the budget car segment. They are aiming at reducing the cost of EVs to be at par with traditional petrol or diesel cars. This will help increase the number of buyers that are switching to electric vehicles which will play an important role in minimizing pollution and the cost of fuel.

What Can Tata Do in Order to Prevail?

  • Improve Technology: Improved batteries, more driving range, and new features.
  • Work More With Fleets: Provide good deals and assistance to companies that are purchasing cars in bulk.
  • Focus on the ₹12-20 Lakh Segment: Price down the cars competitively and advertise well at their main bases where most people buy cars.
  • Expand Charging Stations: Makes it easy for EV owners to be able to charge their cars outside their homes easily.
