Maruti Suzuki has started manufacturing its first ever electric car the e Vitara SUV, at the company’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. This is an important step for the carmaker as it enters the fast growing electric vehicle market. The e Vitara is not only meant for Indian customers but will also be sent to many overseas markets as part of the brand’s global expansion strategy.

The production rollout was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who highlighted the importance of electric mobility in reducing emissions and making India a global EV hub. Maruti Suzuki India’s Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi was also present at the event along with senior company officials and government representatives

First Look and Debut

The new Maruti e Vitara was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2025 earlier this year. It is designed as a mid size electric SUV that combines modern styling with advanced features. The car will be sold in three trims Delta, Zeta and Alpha giving customers the option to pick according to their budget and needs.

Battery Options and Range

Buyers will be able to choose between two battery packs:

  • 61.1kWh battery pack
  • 48.8kWh battery pack

Both versions come with a single electric motor setup. On a full charge the SUV promises to deliver up to 500 kilometers of driving range depending on the conditions. For long-distance travel this figure makes it very practical

Charging time is also kept in check. With a DC fast charger the battery can go from 0 % to 80 % in about 50 minutes. This feature will be useful for those who often travel on highways or need quick charging stops

Design and Color Choices

The 2025 e Vitara is styled to look sporty yet premium. It will be offered in 10 color options including both single tone and dual tone shades. Customers can select from Opulent Red, Bluish Black, Arctic White, Grandeur Grey, Splendid Silver and Nexa Blue. Dual tone shades will pair Land Breeze Green, Splendid Silver, Opulent Red and Arctic White with a contrasting Bluish Black roof. These combinations are expected to appeal to younger buyers who want a stylish SUV

Features and Equipment

Maruti has packed the e Vitara with a long list of features to make it competitive in the EV segment. Some of the main highlights include

  • LED projector headlamps for brighter visibility
  • Three-point LED DRLs and LED tail lamps for a modern look
  • 18-inch alloy wheels that add to the SUV’s bold stance
  • Electric sunroof for a premium cabin feel
  • 360-degree camera to make parking and tight turns easier
  • ADAS safety suite with features like lane assist and emergency braking
  • Seven airbags to ensure maximum passenger safety
  • Ventilated front seats and automatic climate control for comfort in all weather
  • Dual 10-inch digital screens, one for infotainment and the other for the instrument cluster
  • Wireless phone charger and multiple drive modes

These features put the SUV in line with global electric models, while still focusing on Indian driving conditions.

The Hansalpur facility where the e Vitara is being built, is one of Maruti Suzuki’s largest plants. It has an annual production capacity of over 7.5 lakh units. The company has invested heavily to upgrade the plant for EV manufacturing with new assembly lines, battery installation facilities and safety testing labs.

Future Expansion

Maruti Suzuki plans to export the e Vitara to Europe, Japan and Southeast Asian markets as part of its global EV expansion. The company has also confirmed that more EV models are in the pipeline including compact EVs and MPVs which will roll out in the coming years.

What It Means for Buyers

With the launch of the e Vitara, Maruti Suzuki is offering Indian buyers a practical, premium and feature loaded electric SUV. The multiple variants, wide color range, quick charging and long driving range make it a strong option in the EV space. Since it will also be exported to international markets customers can expect global quality standards in terms of design and safety.
