Hyundai Prepares To Bring Its Luxury Brand Genesis To India By 2027
- Genesis to launch in India in 2027
- GV80 SUV and coupe SUV expected first
The Indian automotive market is set to welcome a new luxury option as Hyundai India announces the launch of Genesis in 2027. After carefully evaluating the potential of the market over the years Hyundai has now revealed a clear timeline for bringing its premium brand to the country. The highlight of this launch is that Genesis models will be assembled locally in India which could allow Hyundai to offer competitive pricing right from the start
Genesis Models To Be Locally Assembled In India
Hyundai plans to introduce Genesis vehicles through local assembly. This strategy can make the luxury models more affordable compared to fully imported counterparts. The first models expected for India are
- GV80 SUV
- GV80 coupe SUV
Both models are part of Genesis’s global lineup which includes a mix of internal combustion engine and electric vehicles. Local assembly will also allow Hyundai to leverage its existing manufacturing and service network in India

Importance Of The Indian Market
In a recent address Hyundai president and CEO Jose Munoz emphasized India’s role in the company’s global growth strategy. He highlighted that
- Genesis’s launch in India will benefit from Hyundai’s established network and reputation
- India is not just a market for sales but also offers opportunities for exports
- The move will support Genesis’s global strategy to reduce reliance on the US market while boosting margins
Globally Genesis has achieved one million cumulative sales in eight years and has recorded double digit profit margins in two of those years demonstrating the brand’s consistent growth
Likely Genesis Models For India
Among Genesis’s global lineup six petrol powered models are currently available
- Sedans- G70, G80, G90
- SUVs- GV70, GV80, GV80 coupe-SUV
Additionally three all electric models are part of the lineup GV60 SUV, Electrified G80 and Electrified GV70. For India the focus is expected to be on SUVs as they make up more than 70 percent of Hyundai’s domestic sales. Hyundai has already trademarked the GV80 design in India suggesting that the GV80 SUV and GV80 coupe SUV will be the first models introduced
Engine Options And Features
Globally the GV80 coupe SUV comes with three engine options
- 304hp, 2.5 litre turbo petrol
- 380hp, 3.5 litre turbo petrol
- 415hp, 3.5 litre turbo petrol mildhybrid
The GV80 SUV is available with the 304hp 2.5 litre and 380hp 3.5 litre engines. All models include all wheel drive as standard though the exact powertrain options for India are yet to be confirmed
Genesis Brand Positioning In India
Hyundai is expected to position Genesis against midsize luxury SUVs from brands like Mercedes, BMW and Audi. Given the size and features of the GV80 duo the models will compete directly with vehicles like the Mercedes GLE, BMW X5 and Audi Q7
The Indian luxury car segment is small making up just over 1 percent of total passenger vehicle sales. However it is growing faster than the mainstream segment. In FY2025 luxury car sales increased by 3.3 percent compared to 2 percent growth for the overall industry. With the right product strategy and pricing, Genesis is well positioned to take advantage of this growing market
The 2027 launch of Genesis in India marks Hyundai’s entry into the country’s luxury vehicle segment. Local assembly a strong SUV lineup, and competitive pricing could make Genesis a strong contender in the mid to high end SUV market. As Hyundai leverages its existing network and manufacturing expertise Genesis could soon become a popular choice for luxury car buyers in India
