The Indian automotive market is witnessing a growing demand for CNG vehicles as manufacturers introduce models that combine fuel efficiency with premium features.

According to Vahan portal data, 787,724 CNG passenger vehicles were sold in FY25, While, diesel car sales stood at of 736,508 units. (CNG) has surpassed diesel in the passenger vehicle segment for the first time in India’s automotive history.
Moreover, the market share of CNG cars has risen to 20% of total passenger car sales, from 15% last year.
Rising fuel prices have made vehicles run on CNG an attractive option for the customer. Beyond the cost advantage, the rapid expansion of CNG infrastructure has also driven growth, with nearly 8,000 stations nationwide, supported by private distributors and government initiatives.
Also the government’s efforts to expand the CNG refuelling network have been instrumental in this growth.
Moreover, as a cleaner fuel, CNG helps reduce emissions and aligns with India’s increasing focus on sustainable mobility.
India’s compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle sales are expected to reach 1.1 million units by the end of FY25, driving the total CNG vehicle count in the country to 7.5 million, according to a report by Crisil Intelligence.
