Flex fuel cars revealed at the bharat mobility expo
Several automakers have stated their commitment for introducing more Flex fuel cars in the country. The Indian government too has been pushing for flex fuel alongside EVs.
India’s flex-fuel vehicle market holds immense potential, fueled by environmental concerns, government backing, and technological advancements. Firstly, rising environmental consciousness and stricter emission regulations push consumers towards cleaner alternatives. Flex-fuel vehicles, capable of running on petrol blended with ethanol (biofuel), offer a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional gasoline.
Moreover, Recently, Toyota has announced for setting up of a plant to produce flex cars in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, with an investment of Rs 20,000 crore.
In this article let’s take a look at the cars revealed at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025.

What are Flexible Fuel Vehicles?

Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) are modified vehicles capable of operating entirely on gasoline or any blend of gasoline and ethanol (up to 83%). They have a conventional internal combustion engine similar to the existing gasoline-only vehicles except for their ethanol-compatible fuel system and a different powertrain calibration.
They display improved acceleration performance when operating on higher ethanol blends. Dimethyl Ether (DME) is an ideal alternative fuel as it has a higher cetane number (CN) (~58) than that of conventional diesel (51), indicating higher ignitability. DME can be produced from biomass, coal, industrial wastes, municipal solid wastes, and black liquor (a by-product of pulp) through gasification and the Fisher-Tropsch synthesis process. It can also be produced via catalytic dehydration of methanol. It is generally stored as liquid, and phase change from liquid to vapour/gas could easily occur at ambient temperature and pressure.
The key highlights of the technology are:
  • FFV Technology (Vehicle can run on either 100% diesel or DME-Diesel mode)
  • The transition of diesel trucks from conventional diesel to DME as an alternative fuel (First phase as FFV; Second Phase as dedicated 100% DME/alternative fuelled vehicle)
  • Less / negligible smoke/soot/particulate matter (PM) emission
  • Lower noise with smoother engine/vehicle operation
  • Improvement in transient engine performance
  • Enhancement of energy security
  • Sustainable environment as there is a substantial reduction in GHG emissions.

Hyundai Creta Flex fuel

Flex fuel cars revealed at the bharat mobility expo
Hyundai Creta Flex Fuel, as displayed at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 has no changes on the exterior. Hyundai claims the Creta Flex fuel will run on both 100% petrol and 100% ethanol fuel options.
Hyundai has not announced a launch timeline for the Creta Flex-fuel as of now.
The Creta Flex Fuel is powered by a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo petrol engine that produces approximately 118bhp of power and 170Nm of torque. The smaller engine is paired with a six-speed torque converter automatic, a unique combination since this 1.0-litre engine is paired with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Tata Punch Flex fuel

The Tata Punch flex-fuel looks identical to the standard Punch. The main update, however, lies under the hood, with the same 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, now modified to run on ethanol-blended fuels. Moreover, the Punch has been the top-selling vehicle in India.
Tata Motors have made several mechanical changes to make the Tata Punch’s engine compatible with Flex-fuel.
The major highlight of the flex fuel version was its same 1.2-litre petrol engine capable of producing 86 bhp and 115 Nm torque. This engine can run on E100 blend making it more fuel efficient and eco-friendly. Transmission duties are handled by a 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options.

Mahindra XUV3XO flex fuel

Flex fuel cars revealed at the bharat mobility expo
Cosmetically, the exterior and interior of the Mahindra XUV 3XO flex fuel stays the same with no design change for the flex fuel edition.
The XUV 3XO Flex Fuel comes with a familiar 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine that’s in the standard version. The engine could deliver up to 109 bhp with 200 Nm of torque. It is partnered up with a six-speed manual gearbox. The powertrain will use some additional elements to make it compatible with flex fuel. The XUV 3XO Flex Fuel will be capable of running on a blend of E20 to E85 (20 to 85 percent ethanol in gasoline).
Mahindra has not confirmed any launch date for the flex fuel version of the XUV 3XO.
