Kia Carens Clavis vs Kia Carens: Differences Explained
The refreshed and more premium Carens Clavis, Kia India has officially launched, is a refreshed and more premium version of their popular Carens MPV. The Clavis is not an alternative and will be sold together with the current Carens, to customers who are looking for a better machine with a modern language.

Exterior Improvements are Reflective of Kia’s EV Driven Design

The Carens Clavis borrows styling cues from the Kia’s global range of EVs, including the EV5. At the front is a new triangular headlamp cluster with a 3-pod LED arrangement and an inverted L-shaped LED DRL that covers the entire length of the vehicle. The bumper has been restyled to give the cleaner look, it has chrome replaced with satin silver trim and more black cladding.
The side profile will receive an overhaul by installing 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels (from 16 inches standard on Carens), while the rear end will have sharper LED tail-lamps with an illuminated connecting light strip and improved bumper décor. The regular Carens still has its bred design, with contrasting black grille reflection and surrounded by lighting elements with a heavier chrome finish traditionally.

Interior Improvements Illuminates Clavis as a Premium Product

The Clavis internal is entirely redesigned starting with a 12.3-inch infotainment display that floats in a perfectly continuous link with a digital driver’s display. This replaces the 10.25-inch touchscreen that is in the Carens; the latter continues to remain dashboard integrated. Other changes on the interior of the Newz cars include a matte finished dashboard, a dual function HVAC console (dimensions sourced from the Hyundai Verna) and the new two-spoke steering wheel that looks like the one found in the Kia Syros.
The Clavis also presents new upholstery, ambient lighting treatment and small details in shaping for the seating and trim. From both models, 6- and 7-seat options are available with similar center console layouts.

Feature Upgrades: Clavis Adds ADAS, Panoramic Sunroof

As far as regarding equipment is concerned, some of the additions which the Clavis provides over the Carens include the following:

  • Panoramic sunroof (as compare to single-pane in Carens)
  • 4-way power adjustable driver’s seat

ADAS:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane keep assist

Standard offerings that both models have (on the top trims) are front ventilated seats, second-row electric tumble, dual dashcams, 360-degree camera, wireless charging, Bose audio system and connected car tech with OTA updates. Both MPVs have also got 6 airbags and ESC for safety.

PowerTrain and Transmission Options

Behind the scenes, the Carens and Carens Clavis still advances with the same engine assortment:

  • 1.5-litre NA petrol (115hp)
  • 1.5-litre diesel (116hp)
  • 1.5-litre turbo-petrol (160hp)

Nonetheless, the Clavis comes with an extra gearbox for the turbo petro variant: a 6-gear manual, as well as 6-gear iMT and 7-gear DCT that are currently part of the Carens’ range.

Kia has also admitted that the Clavis will temporarily be offered all-electric in the near future – a step in the direction of the company’s broader EV agenda. The Carens, which is the standard, will not have an electric version.

Positioning and Expected Price Range

Although prices for the Carens Clavis should be released later this month, industry estimates are indicating that there will be a slight premium over equivalent variants of the Carens. Enriched models will still compete in the midsize MPV segment with such rivals as Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, XL6, and Toyota Rumion.
