As the Indian MPV market is booming, Kia is setting to launch its latest vehicle Carens Clavis on June 2, directly face-to-face with the Maruti Suzuki XL6, which managed to golf the segment.

The Carens Clavis will be pitched as a premium 6- and 7- seater MPV and will be offered in three different engines – a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.5 litre turbo petrol and 1.5 litre diesel variant. There are going to be both manual and automatic transmission options available in different trims.
In comparison, the Maruti Suzuki XL6 is equipped with a 1.5-litre K15C Smart Hybrid petrol engine producing 101.5 hp and a torque of 136.8 Nm with power transmission components of a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. Also available is a factory-fitted CNG variant that gives out 86.6 hp and 121.5 Nm of torque.

The next upcoming Kia model has a dual 26.62 inch panoramic display, dual pane sunroof, 64 colour ambient lighting, front ventilated seats and a walk in lever for better third row accessibility. The Carens Clavis will also come with Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), which consists of Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control.
Maruti’s XL6 has a more conventional cabin design with captain seats in the middle row, a 7-inch SmartPlay Pro touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, Suzuki Connect with over 40 connected features etc. Safety features comprise of 4- airbags, 360-degree camera, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Hill Hold Assist.

Safety Features

As far as safety is concerned, the Carens Clavis will launch with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), comprising of the following features:

  • Driver Attention Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning
Other features anticipated include six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), and rear disc brakes, all of which form a complete list of safety features.

  • 360-degree camera
  • Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Although the XL6 takes care of basics in the safety front, the Clavis is expected to have more advanced features, especially regarding the driver assistance segment.

Market Positioning and Price

Available in the price range of ₹11.83 lakh and ₹14.83 lakh (ex-showroom), the XL6 is available for sale. Bookings for the Carens Clavis are opened at ₹25,000, although the pricing is still to be officially released.
Industry analysts view the Clavis to be slightly more expensive and targeting the buyers in the market for more tech-laden and premium MPV market, while the XL6 caters to buyers in the market for fuel economy, reliability, and practicality.

Outlook

The debut of Carens Clavis is set to increase rivalry for family MPV, giving customers more variety. With increased demand for vehicles possessing multi-seaters in urban and semi-urban India, both models are expected to gain momentum during the second half of 2025.
