Kia India Flags Off country's First SUV-Only Double Decker Freight train from Penukonda Railway Station
Kia India has flagged off India’s first double decker freight train to transport SUVs from Penukonda railway station. The company shipped its Sonet and Seltos SUV through a double-decker train, aiming at faster dispatches to dealers, and consequently, to consumers.
The double-decker freight train will enhance the capacity of transporting 264 vehicles, as compared to 100 vehicles in a traditional freight train. This increased capacity will optimize operational efficiency, shorten transit times, and meet the growing demand of India’s expanding automotive industry. When combined with road transportation, this efficient solution will also help reduce the carbon footprint.
Till date, Kia India has transported more than 60,000 SUVs through the rail network to the northern, eastern, and western regions of the country.
Hardeep Singh Brar, Senior Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing, Kia India said, “The launch of India’s first double-decker freight train for SUVs is a significant step in modernising the country’s transportation infrastructure. With reduced transit times, the waiting period for our cars will decrease, allowing SUVs delivered to our customers faster. This innovative, efficient and eco-friendly logistics solution will help accelerate our progress toward meeting our annual growth targets, while reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable, cleaner and connected future.”

Efficient Rail Transport used by Automakers

Maruti Suzuki started using the Indian Railways as a vehicle transportation method in 2014 and in 10 years since, has saved around 10,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions and saved 270 million litres of fuel.
While, Hyundai has transported more than 5.37 lakh units using the railways since 2021 and has effectively prevented 63,452 tons of carbon emissions.
