Land Rover Defender Dakar D7X-R Revealed Ahead Of 2026 Rally Debut

Land Rover has officially shown the Defender Dakar D7X-R, a new rally ready version of the Defender built especially for extreme off road racing. This SUV will take part in the 2026 Dakar Rally in January and then compete through the full W2RC season. It is based on the Defender Octa, but many parts have been reworked so it can enter the Stock category under FIA rules

• The SUV keeps the original D7X body structure, transmission, driveline and the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine from the Defender Octa
• In the race, the engine will not use regular fuel. Instead, it will run on FIA approved advanced sustainable fuel which makes it fit for modern rally raid standards
• Even though the engine is the same as the production model the power output is restricted because FIA rules require an air intake restrictor in the Stock category

Rally-Specific Upgrades In The Defender Dakar D7X-R

These changes prepare the SUV for long, tough rally stages

Land Rover has kept the Defender 110 shell but added many rally grade features:

1. 550-liter rear fuel tank to handle long Dakar stages without frequent stops

2. Competition roll cage for safety in case of flips or high speed crashes

3. 35-inch off-road tires for better grip in sand, rocks and rough terrain

4. 60 mm wider track for better stability on uneven surfaces

5. Raised ride height to improve ground clearance during dune climbs and stone filled paths

These upgrades help the SUV meet the demands of Dakar where vehicles face high heat, gravel, dunes and long hours of racing

Cooling System Improvements

Cooling is extremely important during Dakar and Land Rover has made major changes.

• The cooling system now has a bigger frontal area to let more air flow toward the engine
• A single large radiator replaces the usual three-piece setup
• Four 12 volt cooling fans are used to help the SUV stay cool at low speeds where airflow is low
• The hood design has been updated and a particle filter has been added to stop sand from entering the system
• Roof-mounted light pods help visibility during night stages
• Cabin air intakes on the roof also keep dust and heat away from the inside

Defender Dakar D7X-R: Testing And Rally Debut

Testing details help confirm the SUV’s readiness.

Defender Rally has already tested the Dakar D7X-R prototype for more than 6,000 km across rough and off road tracks. These tests help engineers fine tune the behavior of the SUV for the long Dakar stages

The 2026 Dakar Rally will start on 3 January in Saudi Arabia and the Defender Dakar D7X-R is scheduled to take part in the event as its first official race. After Dakar it will continue through the entire 2026 W2RC season
