The test results show major safety gaps in the Africa-spec version of the hatchback
Here’s what the Global NCAP report highlighted:
Weak Adult Safety Score
The testing agency found that the car offered very low protection for adults during a frontal crash
- The driver’s chest area showed “concerning weak protection”
- In the side impact test, the chest protection level moved into the high-risk zone, crossing the injury limits set by Global NCAP
- Because of this high injury risk, the car was given zero points for adult safety
The report added that the bodyshell and footwell area were marked unstable in the frontal crash. This means these parts may collapse or deform further if the crash is more severe
Missing Safety Features In Africa-Spec Model
The Africa-spec model tested by NCAP does not come with several important safety features that are common in many cars today
Some key points include:
- No side body airbags
- No head-protecting airbags
- Seat belt reminders only for the driver
- No ESC (Electronic Stability Control) as standard equipment
Because these features were missing, the car’s performance in both frontal and side impact tests was affected
Global NCAP’s Statement On The Hyundai Grand i10 Test
After the results were shared, Global NCAP’s CEO Richard Woods commented strongly on the issue. He said it is “unacceptable” to continue seeing different safety standards for countries with lower income levels. Woods also added that every buyer deserves equal safety, no matter which region they belong to
He explained that improving vehicle safety in Africa is a major goal for the organization and that results like this point to the need for better safety rules and consistent standards
Child Safety Score Of Hyundai Grand i10
While the adult score was extremely low the hatchback performed somewhat better in the child safety category
Here are the key details:
- The car earned three stars for child occupant safety
- The total score recorded was 28.57 out of 49
- The readings for child dummies in frontal and side impacts showed moderate protection, but not high enough to improve the overall ranking
The results indicate that despite doing slightly better for child passengers, the car’s weak structure and lack of essential features still create overall safety concerns
Differences Between Africa-Spec And India-Spec Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
It is important to note that the car tested by Global NCAP was not the same as the India spec model.
The hatchback sold in India known as the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, comes with more safety equipment even in its lower trims
Standard Safety Features On India-Spec Model
The India spec version includes:
- Driver and passenger airbags
- Side and curtain airbags (on selected variants)
- ABS (Anti lock Braking System)
- Seat belt pretensioners for both front passengers
These features already make the India model safer than the tested Africa-spec version
Extra Features On Higher Variants
Higher trims of the Nios offer additional features like:
- Electronic Stability Program
- Vehicle Stability Management
- Hill-start assist
- ISOFIX mounts for child seats (available only on top trims)
Because of this wider safety feature list, the India spec model has a different safety profile compared to the export version
What These Crash Results Mean For Buyers
Although the tested car was meant for African markets, the fact that it is manufactured in India naturally raises questions among buyers. Based on the data provided the India spec Hyundai Grand i10 Nios clearly offers more features, stronger safety equipment and better protection systems
However the results still highlight the importance of checking which features are available on each variant before making a purchase. Features like airbags, ESC and a stable bodyshell play a major role in reducing injuries in any crash
