Mahindra’s new electric SUVs the BE 6 and XEV 9e have crossed a big milestone selling more than 20,000 units within just five months of launch. Together these SUVs have already covered over 9.3 crore kilometers on Indian roads. This is a strong sign that Indian buyers are becoming more confident about choosing electric cars as their main vehicles. These two models are not only making headlines for their sales but are also showing that EVs can be practical family SUVs and not just city runabouts
For years, electric cars in India were seen as small city commuters with limited use. Many buyers believed they could not be trusted for long drives or family trips. The BE 6 and XEV 9e are helping change this old belief. Built on Mahindra’s advanced INGLO platform, both SUVs provide long driving range, quick charging, and practical features for families. This gives buyers confidence to choose them as their main car rather than a second option.
The certified driving range of these SUVs goes up to 683 km, with real-world driving easily above 500 km. DC fast charging can power the battery from 20 percent to 80 percent in just 20 minutes. This makes long highway drives stress-free and more convenient for families.
The Mahindra BE 6 has been designed keeping daily use in mind. The INGLO platform offers a flat floor and a longer wheelbase which means more cabin space and comfort for passengers. It also comes with a large boot and a front trunk (frunk) making it highly practical for families carrying luggage on long trips
The suspension system uses a 5 link independent setup with frequency-selective dampers, which has been tuned specially for Indian roads. This ensures a smooth ride during both short city drives and long-distance travel
Even though these are family SUVs, performance has not been compromised. Both models deliver up to 282 bhp of power and 380 Nm of torque, making them fast and responsive. They can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds and can reach a top speed of more than 200 km/h. Rear wheel drive setup which is rare in SUVs of this size adds to the driving fun and gives a sportier feel on the road
The BE 6 and XEV 9e come with a strong technology package. Key highlights include:
Running costs are another big reason buyers are choosing these SUVs. The cost of running is about Rs 1.1 per km, compared to almost Rs 9 per km for petrol or diesel SUVs. Over five years, Mahindra estimates that BE 6 owners can save around Rs 12.63 lakh, while XEV 9e owners can save about Rs 13.47 lakh compared to ICE SUVs. Buyers also benefit from road tax exemptions in many states, tax deductions of up to Rs 1.5 lakh on EV loans, and state-level subsidies.
With over 20,000 units sold already, the BE 6 and XEV 9e show that Indian buyers are ready to adopt EVs as their main family cars. These SUVs combine space, performance, technology and affordability, giving customers strong reasons to switch. They are not just another set of electric cars they mark a turning point for electric SUVs in India and highlight how fast the country is moving toward sustainable mobility
