Mercedes-Benz has officially launched the highly anticipated electric version of the iconic G-Wagen, the G-Class Electric, in India at Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom). The electric G-Wagon will be showcased at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Expo.
The electric SUV carries forward the legacy of its ICE counterpart. Mercedes-Benz claims that the “uncompromised” machine can even outperform its combustion-engine sibling in terms of off-road performance.
Notably, the electric SUV is already sold out till the third quarter of 2025.
Mercedes-Benz G 580: Exterior
The G 580 with EQ Tech retains the signature styling of the G-Class while incorporating EV-specific design cues. The traditional grille has been replaced with a closed-off panel featuring an illuminated octagonal surround and a prominent Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star logo. Round LED headlights with integrated LED DRLs, fender-mounted LED turn indicators, multiple gloss black inserts, bulging muscular bonnet. The SUV’s roof rack also has a light bar, emphasizing its off-road capabilities. The SUV has a sidestep, strong door handles, aerodynamic air curtains, AMG 20-inch aerodynamic AMG alloy wheels for Edition One and the signature side body moulding that runs across the length of this SUV are notable elements. At the rear, the flat tailgate stays true to the G-Wagen DNA, adding to the butch appeal.
Additionally, the bumpers have been redesigned and the buyers can now replace the classic spare wheel with a square storage box for added convenience.
Mercedes-Benz G 580: Interior
On the inside, the G580 gets dual 12.3-inch screens that serve as the driver’s display and infotainment system, besides physical controls for climate and ventilation. Other notable highlights include wireless charger, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, keyless entry, a Burmester sound system , multi-zone climate control, a 360-degree camera, ADAS, and more.
Mercedes-Benz G 580: Battery, Range, & Powertrain
The Mercedes-Benz G580 is powered by four electric motors one for each wheel. Each of these units produce 147 hp and a combined output of 587 hp and 1,165 Nm of peak torque. All of these motors get a separate 2-speed gearbox. The power produced by these motors is used to propel the SUV from 0-100 kmph in 4.7 seconds. Meanwhile, the top-speed is limited to 180 kmph. The SUV uses a 116 kWh battery pack which offers a range of 473 km on a single charge. It can be charged using a 200 kW charger in 32 min.
