German luxury car-maker Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to launch the electric G-class, officially known as the G580 with EQ Technology in India. Moreover, a pre-production concept of the same— called EQG— was showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo in New Delhi, earlier in February this year.
The electric version of the G-Class, is scheduled for January 9th 2025. The pricing for the same is also expected to be revealed on this date.
Bookings for the electric G-class was opened by Mercedes-Benz in july last year. It will arrive in India through the Completely-Built Unit (CBU) route.
Mercedes G 580 : Exterior and Design
The G 580 with EQ Technology retains the G-Class’s signature boxy design and muscular aesthetics.The front grille is replaced by a closed-off panel, similar to other Mercedes-Benz EVs. Moreover, it also features redesigned bumpers. Buyers can choose an EQ-style blanked-out grille with an illuminated surround and black headlamp housings.
Notable updates include new alloy wheel designs and the option to replace the traditional spare wheel with a storage box for charging cables at the rear, where it has the usual spare wheel on the tailgate has been replaced by an elegantly designed squarish case, also with an LED light strip all around. Meanwhile, the bumper and taillights appear to be the same as the ICE model.
Mercedes G 580 : Interior and features
Inside, the electric G-Class is nearly the same as the ICE version, save for some EQ-branded touches. It gets the same 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and instrument cluster.
The dashboard is upright and tall, with little space between the base of the windshield and the steering wheel, giving the driver a commanding view of what’s ahead. Massaging seats are part of the Active Multicontour Seat Plus package, and the adjustable side bolsters can be set to hold you a little more snuggly when driving off-road. Other features include temperature-controlled cup holders, wireless charging, keyless entry, Burmester 3D surround-sound system, rear-seat entertainment units and more.
Mercedes G 580 : Battery and Range
The Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology retains the ladder-frame chassis with independent suspension and a solid rear axle.The G580 uses a 116 kWh battery pack, offering 240 miles (386 km) of range. It comes with fast-charging capabilities of up to 200 kW at Level 3 DC charger, allowing 10-80% charge in 30 minutes.
There are three drive modes: Comfort, Sport, and Individual and of course it has two off-road modes: Trail and Rock.
