For the first time in its history, Japanese carmaker Nissan has revealed the sixth-gen Nissan Micra as an electric vehicle (EV). Using technology from the Renault 5 electric, the new Micra EV is meant for the European market and is scheduled to go on sale there later in the year.

Even though the global community praises the design and promised qualities of the Micra EV, Nissan has not revealed if it will launch the hatchback in India.

Two Available Battery Types, Capable of Travelling up to 408 km 

  • With a 40 kWh battery, the car achieves 90 kW (120 bhp) and 225 Nm and the manufacturer claims a range of 308 km. 
  • With a 52 kWh battery, the car produces 110 kW (147.5 bhp) and 245 Nm of torque and claims to offer a maximum range of 408 km
All versions can use DC fast charging and quickly go from 15% to 80% in less than 30 minutes with proper equipment (100 kW charging is available for the 52 kWh battery and 80 kW for the 40 kWh version). Both versions include a heat pump, a system for managing battery temperature and the ability for V2L, so users can connect external devices to the car’s battery.

The Micra EV model comes with dual 10.1-inch displays: one for the car’s technology and the other for the dashboard instruments. Everyone benefits from the built-in GPS and can easily connect their phone via Bluetooth. Nissan’s ProPilot driver assistance system is available and includes lane centering, adaptive cruise control and emergency braking.
Seat upholstery options are Modern, Audacious and Chill, so customers can find upholstered seats that match their home decor.

Plans for an Indian launch are unclear

Rapid growth in India’s electric car sales—over 1.7 million EVs sold in FY 2024–25—is prompting many to wonder about Nissan’s plans for the country. Whereas Tata Motors and MG Motor are becoming well-known in the segment, Nissan has yet to become a true competitor there.
Analysts expect the Micra EV to appeal to Indian drivers, given that urban interest in electric hatchbacks is growing. Yet, since the imported car might cost around ₹18–26 lakh, concerns about the price could block sales in an EV market where well-established competitor choices are less than ₹10 lakhs.

Global Trend towards Electric Hatchbacks

Its launch also indicates that major automakers are beginning to rework their old ICE model names and turn them into electric vehicles. It matches Nissan’s EV goals and takes place when Europe’s EV sales are moving ahead of those for fossil-fuel vehicles, recent reports saying that EVs made up more than 40% of all new car registrations in Q1 2025.
