Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari urged the automobile industry to start preparation for the next-generation of emission norms, i.e., BS7 (Bharat Stage 7),
In a bid to align with the upcoming Euro 7 norms, which are set to come into action in the European Union countries in 2025.
Notably, the Indian automobile industry jumped straight from BS4 to BS6 emission norms back in April 2020 in order to stay in line with the Euro 6 standard, which led many manufacturers to cease production of diesel engines due to the high cost of making them compliant.
Moreover, the automakers had to face the weight of technical improvements, and the vehicles became much more expensive during the switch from BS4 to BS6 emission requirements in April 2020.
In order to grow the export business, produce cleaner automobiles in European nations, and reduce local vehicular pollution, Indian car manufacturers will have to follow the transit system.
Gadkari is said to have stated, “You should start at your own level to carry out research for manufacturing of BS 7 vehicles. Our industry should be on par with its European counterparts.
The government had to set the deadline and push the industry to comply.
The announcement by the minister came days after the European Commission declared that it would start implementing Euro-7 emission norms by July 2025 for new cars and vans India is likely to adopt BS7 around 2027.
India adopted the BS6 Phase II norms from April 1, 2023, onwards, focusing on real-time driving emissions instead of in controlled environments.
All the vehicles now come with an OBD (on-board diagnostic) system to monitor real-time emission levels.
However, Gadkari stated, “We would consult the industry before introducing any deadline for this transition,”
