  • Petrol cars, diesel cars face new slabs; goods carriers taxed on price; EV exemption stays.

One-Time Vehicle Tax Hike in Maharashtra Hits Premium Cars

From July 1, Maharashtra’s one-time vehicle tax cap jumps from Rs.20 Lakhs to Rs.30 Lakhs under the amended Motor Vehicle Tax Act.

RTO officials say premium cars priced above Rs.20 Lakhs will now incur a 13–15% levy. CNG vehicles see a uniform 1% hike across all brackets, and light goods carriers pay 7% of their ex-showroom value.

Electric vehicles continue to enjoy zero one-time vehicle tax under this Maharashtra one-time tax policy.

Maharashtra Vehicle Tax Cap Increase to Rs.30 Lakhs

Under the new rule, the maximum one-time vehicle tax ceiling has risen to Rs.30 Lakhs. Previously, cars above Rs.20 Lakhs hit the top bracket under Maharashtra’s motor vehicle tax.

RTO officials note the change is projected to add about Rs.800 Crore to state revenues. Buyers of premium cars must now factor in this higher cap when budgeting on-road costs.

Imports and company-owned vehicles still attract a flat 20% one-time tax.

  • Old cap: Rs.20 Lakhs
  • New cap: Rs.30 Lakhs
  • Premium models above Rs.30 Lakhs pay slab rates up to new ceiling
  • Imported & company cars: unchanged flat 20%

New Maharashtra Vehicle Tax: Petrol and Diesel Car Tax Slabs

Buyers should update their on-road pricing calculators to include these revised rates:

  • The vehicle tax hike leaves petrol cars under Rs.10 Lakhs at 11%.
  • Diesel cars below Rs.10 Lakhs continue at 13%.
  • Models priced between Rs.10–20 Lakhs face 12% (petrol) and 14% (diesel).
  • Premium cars above Rs.20 Lakhs now incur 13% (petrol) and 15% (diesel).

CNG and LNG Vehicle Tax Increase in Maharashtra

CNG vehicles now carry a flat 1% hike in one-time tax across all slabs.

  • A Rs.10 Lakh CNG car moves from 11% to 12%, adding Rs.10,000 more upfront.
  • Mid-range CNG models (Rs.10–20 Lakhs) shift from 12% to 13%.

This tweak balances green mobility incentives with the state’s budget needs. RTO officials expect roughly Rs.100 Crore extra from CNG and LNG vehicle levies.

Light Goods Carrier Tax Shift in Maharashtra

Pickup trucks, tempos and small lorries up to 7,500 kg now pay 7% of ex-showroom price.

Earlier, weight-based fees charged just Rs.20,000 on a Rs.10 Lakh mini truck. Under the price slab, the same vehicle now incurs Rs.70,000 in one-time tax.

This price-based approach adds fairness and nets an extra Rs.600 Crore for Maharashtra. Small businesses must update their freight-cost models to include the new levy.

  • Scope: Light goods carriers ≤ 7,500 kg
  • New tax: 7% of ex-showroom price
  • Old weight-based fee: Rs.8,400–37,800

Maharashtra Vehicle Tax Latest: EV Exemption Remains

All electric vehicles continue to enjoy zero one-time tax under state policy. A proposed 6% levy on EVs above Rs.30 Lakhs was dropped before July 1.

This EV exemption supports Maharashtra’s push for cleaner, sustainable transport. RTO officials stress that buyers of any EV model pay no extra one-time levy.

Zero one-time vehicle tax keeps electric mobility more affordable amid hikes.

  • EVs of any price: 0% one-time tax
  • Proposed 6% EV levy withdrawn
  • Policy bolsters green transport goals
