Volkswagen Discontinues 1.5 TSI Petrol Manual Option For Virtus and Taigun
- The discontinuation of the 1.5-litre TSI manual option for the Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun is likely due to low sales volume, as demand for automatic transmissions is rising in the Indian automotive market, especially in higher-output segments.
Volkswagen has discontinued the 6-speed manual transmission option for the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol (TSI) variants of the Virtus sedan and the Taigun SUV. This engine is now available exclusively with the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG) gearbox.
With the recent update, buyers looking for a manual gearbox will now have to opt for the smaller 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine, which continues to be offered with a manual transmission.
The VW Virtus and Taigun 1.5 TSI manual powertrain were priced at Rs 17.09 lakh-17.33 lakh and Rs 17.04 lakh. Following the manual’s phase-out, starting prices for the 1.5 TSI-powered Virtus and Taigunstand at Rs 18.80 lakh and Rs 18.95 lakh.
The Taigun has featured a manual option on its top-spec variant since its 2021 release; however, the Virtus was originally limited to a DCT gearbox until the 6-speed manual was added in 2023 to appeal to driving enthusiasts.
Volkswagen has not issued an official statement regarding the discontinuation. It is likely aimed to streamline the product lineup and align with market trends.
The decision follows a similar move by Skoda, which discontinued the 1.5-litre TSI manual options for the Kushaq and Slavia models in September 2024.
