Volvo XC40 Recharge renamed as EX40
Volvo has officially renamed the XC40 Recharge electric SUV as the EX40 in India. The name change has been made to bring the SUV’s nomenclature in line with Volvo’s global EV models.
The Volvo EX40 Recharge now comes in at Rs 56.10 lakh (ex-showroom), which is a slight hike from earlier.
The EX40 now only has a rear-wheel-drive configuration, featuring a 69 kWh battery pack. The rear axle-mounted electric motor can produce 238 hp and 420 Nm of peak torque.
The ‘Recharge’ name has also been removed from the model’s plug-in hybrid range, which will be denoted using the ‘T6’ and ‘T8’ suffixes. The XC40 and C40 names, though, will continue to be used on the model’s ICE versions.
Moreover, Volvo has increased the EX40’s feature list compared to the XC40 Recharge. A 360-degree camera and Harmon Kardon sound system have been added. These were also available on the XC40 Recharge but only on the dual-motor variant.
Volvo had adopted the current nomenclature pattern back in 1995 by incorporating ‘S’ to denote sedans, ‘V’ for estates, ‘C’ for hatchbacks and coupes, and ‘XC’ for SUVs. It was followed by a size-based number.
Volvo currently has two EVs on sale in India: the now “renamed” EX40 and EC40. The Swedish automaker is expected to bring the new flagship EX90 and the all-new entry-level EX30 electric SUV to India soon.

Volvo EX 40: Price and competitors

The EX40 is priced between ₹56.10 lakh (ex-showroom, India). It rivals the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (₹46.05 lakh), Kia EV6 (₹60.97 – 65.97 lakh), Mercedes-Benz EQA (₹66 lakh), and BMW iX1 (₹66.90 lakh).
