Tesla is finally entering the Indian market, with its first showrooms set to open in New Delhi and Mumbai as early as April.

The American automaker will introduce imported EVs, with prices starting at ₹21 lakh. India’s revised import duties and government incentives could boost Tesla’s prospects.

According to reports, Tesla plans to sell cars in three locations initially: Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

The company has secured prime retail spaces in New Delhi’s Aerocity and Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

Tesla’s initial plans include launching an electric vehicle priced under $25,000 (around Rs 22 lakh) for the Indian market.

Taking into consideration, Indian consumers are highly price-sensitive, making it challenging for Tesla to gain traction without competitive pricing. Moreover, The Indian government recently reduced import duties on high-end EVs. Which means we can expect the Tesla cars to have a more affordable price than expected.

The initial Tesla electric cars for India could be the Model 3 and the Model Y. However, these models are priced above USD 25,000 in the international markets.

Tesla car’s price in India

Tesla is considering importing EVs from its German factory, the company is yet to commit to manufacturing cars in India. The Indian government recently reduced basic customs duty (BCD) on imported cars priced above USD 40,000 to 70% from the earlier 125%. However, sub-USD 40,000 models still attract a tariff of 70%.

It remains to be seen how the carmaker adjusts the specifications of the India-focussed models to keep the price in check. Lets take a look at the expected price for Tesla cars in India.

Tesla Model 3 – ₹60 lakh
Tesla Model Y – ₹70 lakh
Tesla Model S – ₹1.50 crore
Tesla Model X – ₹2 crore
