Maruti Suzuki Leading India’s CNG Car Market in 2025
Maruti Suzuki, India’s biggest car producer, now has six CNG models available right from the factory in hatchback and compact car categories. Its line-up stands out as a reference for economical and eco-friendly choices in a large consumer market.
Here are the Maruti cars that can be powered by CNG, going from entry-level to high-end hatchbacks:
ModelEx-Showroom Price (₹)Mileage (km/kg)Engine Output
Alto K10 CNG₹5.73 – ₹5.96 lakh33.851.0L K10C, 56.7PS
S-Presso CNG₹5.91 – ₹6.12 lakh32.731.0L K10C, 56.7PS
Celerio CNG₹6.74 lakh34.431.0L K10C, 56.7PS
WagonR CNG₹6.45 – ₹6.89 lakh33.471.0L K10C, 56.7PS
Swift CNG₹8.20 – ₹9.20 lakh32.851.2L, 77.5PS
Baleno CNG₹8.40 – ₹9.33 lakh30.611.2L, 77.5PS
The rise in fuel costs and interest in green cars means Maruti Suzuki continues to lead the CNG market with six strong cars across all budgets. It has been reported that India sold more than 7.15 lakh CNG vehicles in 2024, showing a rapid increase in demand. Both high gas and diesel costs, new CNG infrastructure all over India, and efforts to promote low-cost eco-mobility are much of what is driving the change.

CNG Infrastructure Growth Bolsters Demand

As India’s network of CNG stations grows quickly, CNG-powered vehicles are becoming more common as well. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas hopes to increase the CNG filling stations to 10,000 by 2027 as part of its clean mobility mission.
“As fuel prices remain volatile, consumers are clearly turning to CNG vehicles for better cost efficiency and sustainability,” according to an industry expert from CRISIL. “Maruti Suzuki’s consistent expansion in the CNG space gives them a strategic advantage.”

Making travel cheaper and cleaner is what is behind this change

One reason for choosing CNG is that it is much cheaper to drive these vehicles. Industry estimates show:
  • CNG: ₹2.5/km
  • Petrol: ₹7/km
  • Diesel: ₹6/km
The environmental impact of CNG energy is better than that of petrol because CNG creates just 20 percent less climate-changing carbon dioxide.

Cost-effective CNG is leading middle-class residents in urban areas

Many urban middle-class people, first-time buyers, and fleet groups prefer Maruti Suzuki’s range. The WagonR CNG and Celerio CNG are popular among buyers looking for good mileage and plenty of space, while the Swift CNG and Baleno CNG are hit with those who care about style but still want to reduce emissions.

What Lies Ahead?

With the expanding use of CNG, higher petrol prices, newer emission standards, and support from the government for such vehicles, SIAM projects that CNG cars will likely have over 15% of the passenger vehicle market share in India by 2027. If Maruti Suzuki continues to add more CNG cars, it could solidify its place as the top company driving green mobility in India.
