This makes Mahindra the first Indian original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to perform a live crash test on an EV.
The XUV 9e underwent a frontal 40% offset deformable barrier crash test at 64 km/h. This specific test simulates a common type of real-world collision.
The results were significant: the airbags deployed as expected, and the occupant cage remained intact, showcasing the vehicle’s structural integrity and advanced safety features.
To reinforce safety, Mahindra conducted several battery resilience tests. A live battery cell withstood a nail penetration test without catastrophic failure, retained its integrity during a fire resistance test, and survived a crush test with a 22-ton truck driven over it.
While the vehicle is yet to undergo Global NCAP testing, the company’s internal evaluations suggest a strong likelihood of achieving a top safety rating.
Mahindra XEV 9e: Performance and Range
Under the hood, the XEV 9e offers two battery options: a 59 kWh pack and a larger 79 kWh pack. The SUV claims an MIDC-certified range of up to 650 kilometers, making it a strong contender for long-distance travel. Additionally, the vehicle supports ultra-fast charging, with a 20–80% charge achievable in just 20 minutes using a 175 kW charger.
