After months of anticipation, Mahindra has finally launched the much-awaited the 5-door Thar.

Mahindra has launched the Thar Roxx in India at a starting price of Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Thar competes with two prominent 5-door lifestyle SUVs: the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the Force Gurkha. The Jimny too has a strong legacy in India thanks to the Gypsy, which was on sale for 33 years.

The five-door variants of the Thar and Gurkha are significantly longer than the Jimny. It’s clear that the Jimny is not in the same league when it comes to size, but it is the lightest by a fair margin, which in combination with its size makes it the most manoeuvrable.

The Thar Roxx is the only one that offers both petrol and diesel fuel options; the Gurkha is diesel-only while the Jimny is petrol-only.

The Thar Roxx, Jimny, and Gurkha 5-door each offer distinct specifications tailored to cater to the different preferences of Indian buyers.

Coming to the off-road specs, the Thar Roxx has the best approach angle, while the Jimny has the best departure angle. The Gurkha 5-door, meanwhile, has the best ramp over angle. The Gurkha has the least departure angle, at 25 degrees, while the Jimny has the highest at 50 degrees. The Gurkha 5 Door has the most water wading capacity thanks to its snorkel intake. The Thar Roxx comes second in this department with a water wading capacity that’s 50mm shy of the Gurkha 5 Door. The Jimny offers a poor water wading capacity of 300mm.

In terms of dimensions, the new Thar Roxx is the longest and widest SUV among its rivals. It also boasts the longest wheelbase among the 3 SUVs. The Gurkha 5 Door is the tallest SUV here, followed by the Thar Roxx and Jimny, respectively. In terms of road presence, the Thar Roxx and Gurkha 5 Door stands out due to their length, width and height.

Talking of the drive layouts, the Jimny and Gurkha are strict 4x4s, while both the Thar Roxx and Scorpio N can be had in either RWD or 4WD guise with their diesel engines; the petrol variants are RWD only. On the gearbox front, the Gurkha misses out on an automatic gearbox, while the Jimny only gets a 4-speed unit for its automatic.

The 2024 Gurkha 5 Door is currently priced at Rs. 18.0 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Jimny 4×4 is the most affordable SUV here with prices ranging from Rs. 12.74 lakh to Rs. 13.69 lakh.
