The way Minus Zero achieves its autonomous mobility solution — using cameras only — could give India a leading role in bringing this technology to emerging markets.
For the first time, deep-tech startup Minus Zero from India has released a full autopilot technology that is custom-made for driving on Indian highways.

Quick Comparison: Minus Zero as Compared to Global Autopilot Systems

While most automated driving systems on the market depend on advanced maps and specific instructions, this solution uses AI and a camera system to drive safely without both. The system can manage heavy city traffic, narrow roadways and unstructured, unmarked roads, while being able to react to surprise obstacles like animals, carts, and motorbikes.
Developers have tried the technology on tricky roads in Bengaluru and it is now being developed, validated and ready for commercial deployment with automakers within two years.

India-Specific Innovation

Unlike most current autonomous vehicles, Minus Zero’s autopilot system is distinct from those found in the U.S., Germany or China. Most satellite navigation systems need set infrastructure and are powered by ready-made HD maps.
“The Indian road environment presents unique challenges, and this requires a completely different approach to autonomy,” said a Minus Zero representative. “Our AI models are trained end-to-end using self-supervised learning from large-scale video data, allowing them to generalize to unfamiliar roads and objects they’ve never encountered before.”
This system, based on self-learning models, works well in places where road conditions are very different which fits India and other growing markets well.

Dealing with the Difference in Safety Around the World

Reported data indicates that ADAS saved lives in developed nations, yet over 85% of crashes are found in emerging countries where these systems are less common. Since people in these markets are asking for safer, brighter cars, India is becoming an important place to build new generations of autopilot technology.
Those purchasing cars in the middle and high segments in India are starting to pay more attention to advanced technologies. With high acceptance of Level 1 and Level 2 ADAS systems in the last two years, the market is now moving toward more advanced Level 2+ and Level 3 technology.

Sector is now working in collaboration

It is confirmed that Minus Zero is already working with more than one major vehicle maker concerning their autopilot stack. We are continually holding discussions with extra manufacturers.
Before, the company introduced India’s first driverless shuttle for use on campus and now it is aiming for full autonomy outside. According to the startup, production-ready systems should be possible by 2027, in line with OEM schedules for future electric and connected cars.

Global Context

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving, Drive Pilot from Mercedes-Benz and God’s Eye from BYD have reached global firsts in autonomous driving. Still, many of these systems lack complete functionality in India because they depend on well-structured traffic and quality sensors.
The way Minus Zero achieves its autonomous mobility solution — using cameras only — could give India a leading role in bringing this technology to emerging markets.
