The Tesla Model Y India launch is now on the horizon after a fully camouflaged, right-hand drive facelifted test mule was spotted unloading at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex.
This single-motor rear-wheel-drive variant claims a 466 km WLTP-equivalent range and dashes from 0–100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.
Tesla’s first experience center opens July 15, with deliveries expected from late August 2025.
Tesla’s inaugural experience center at BKC, Mumbai, throws open its doors on July 15 2025. The outlet handles sales, service and spares under Tesla’s direct-to-customer model.
A Delhi showroom is slated for late July, followed by Bengaluru by year-end.
An online configurator will let prospective buyers choose color, wheel size and accessories.
The facelift, codenamed “Juniper,” brings:
Matte grey camouflage hides most body lines but confirms lower drag and a sleeker bumper design. Inside, ventilated seats, updated upholstery and a redesigned center console enhance comfort.
Tesla will initially launch the single-motor RWD Model Y in India.
Global figures for both variants are tabled below:
Variant | Drivetrain | Range (km) | 0–100 km/h (s) | Top Speed (km/h) |
---|---|---|---|---|
Model Y RWD (India spec) | Single-motor | 466 | 5.9 | 217 |
Model Y Long Range AWD (global) | Dual-motor AWD | 529 | 4.8 | 217 |
Tesla imports its EVs as completely built units (CBUs) from Shanghai and Berlin.
Early customs filings show:
Cost Component | Amount (Rs.) |
---|---|
Declared unit value | 27.69 Lakh |
Import duty & taxes | Approx. 21.00 Lakh |
Estimated ex-showroom | 60.00–70.00 Lakh |
India levies roughly 70% customs duty on EVs priced under $40 000 (approx. Rs. 34.39 Lakhs), plus additional cess and surcharges.
Tesla’s decision to import CBUs means the full tariff applies, pushing ex-showroom prices well above global equivalents.
Until local assembly or a production facility materializes, these duties will define pricing and margins for Tesla cars.
Tesla’s entry, powered by its Supercharger network plans, seamless over-the-air updates and brand prestige, will force incumbents like Tata, MG and Hyundai to refine specs, after-sales support and pricing.
Buyers will weigh total cost of ownership, charging infrastructure and performance. The Model Y’s mid-July showroom launch and late-August deliveries mark a major milestone for premium electric SUVs in India.
