Maruti Wagon R E85 Flex-Fuel Car Launch: Everything You Need To Know

Maruti Suzuki has officially introduced the production-spec Wagon R Flex-Fuel as India’s first flex-fuel passenger car.

Unveiled by Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Hardeep Singh Puri, the production-spec vehicle marks a milestone in alternative-fuel mobility. It is engineered to operate on any blend of ethanol and petrol ranging from E20 to E85 (and up to E100).

Powertrain, Mechanical Upgrades & Fuel Compatibility

The standout feature of the Wagon R BioFlex is its ability to adapt seamlessly to varying fuel types.

Advanced Fuel Compatibility

Unlike regular vehicles, this hatchback is engineered to run on any ethanol-blended petrol ranging from E20 all the way up to E85 (and even up to E100). This means the car can operate on fuel containing up to 85% ethanol and 15% standard petrol, significantly lowering India’s dependence on crude oil imports.

Heavily Re-Engineered Engine & Transmission

Under the hood, the car features Maruti’s trusted 1.2-litre, four-cylinder K12N naturally-aspirated petrol engine, paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox. While high-ethanol blends typically present performance challenges, Maruti Suzuki notes that tuning modifications actually provide a noticeable performance and torque bump over the standard E20 petrol counterpart.

The setup successfully delivers a strong output of 90 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque, matching the performance of standard petrol models while slashing tailpipe emissions by up to 79%.

Robust Mechanical Modifications

Because ethanol is highly corrosive and naturally absorbs moisture, a standard engine would quickly deteriorate. To combat this, Maruti Suzuki implemented extensive hardware upgrades:

• Upgraded Hardware: Fitted with larger fuel injectors, heavy-duty fuel pumps, and hardened valve seat rings to resist ethanol wear.
• Corrosion Resistance: Reinforced internal components, including specialized fuel lines, engine valves, injectors, and seals.
• Advanced Electronics & Sensors: Equipped with a dedicated ethanol sensor that instantly detects the exact fuel blend percentage. This allows the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to automatically recalibrate and adjust air-fuel ratios and spark timing on the fly.
• Cold Start Assistance: Ethanol burns cooler, making cold starts difficult. Maruti resolved this by integrating heated fuel lines directly into the fuel rails to guarantee smooth ignition in cold weather.

Design

Visually, the Wagon R BioFlex retains the highly practical and popular “tall-boy” design that Indians love, but it brings several premium upgrades to the table.

Exterior

The car maintains its signature aesthetic, featuring a prominent blacked-out front grille with a central chrome strip and a distinct dual-split headlamp setup. To stand out from standard models, it features exclusive “Flex Fuel” door decals and a distinctive “BioFlex” badge on the tailgate.

Interior

Inside, drivers and passengers are greeted by a functional, dual-tone beige and black interior layout. Tech features include:

• A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system
• Wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity
• Steering-mounted audio and phone controls
• A clear, semi-digital instrument cluster

Safety Features

Maruti Suzuki has significantly upgraded the safety department for this model. The BioFlex comes equipped with a comprehensive safety kit:

Because higher ethanol blends are not yet available at every local fuel pump, the Wagon R Flex-Fuel is currently limited to the commercial sector (yellow plate). Targeting fleet operators allows these cars to run on fixed routes where localized alternative fuel stations can support them efficiently.

Expected Pricing & Verdict

Maruti Suzuki has not disclosed an exact consumer price tag due to this initial fleet-oriented rollout. However, because of the specialized, corrosion-resistant components, advanced sensors, and upgraded electronics, it will command a premium over standard petrol and CNG models.

• Expected Price Range: Anticipated to start around ₹8.50 Lakh to ₹9.50 Lakh (ex-showroom).
• Variants: The car will be offered in a simplified lineup of 2 variants to streamline fleet acquisition.

Fuel Infrastructure Roadmap

The widespread utility of the Wagon R BioFlex hinges heavily on fuel availability. To combat this, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced a targeted rollout plan for higher ethanol dispensers:

• Phase 1: Setting up 50 to 100 dispensing stations immediately across the Delhi-NCR and Mumbai-Pune-Nagpur corridors.
• Phase 2: Expanding to 500 stations by the end of the calendar year.
• Phase 3: Targeting approximately 5,000 E85 dispensing outlets across major Indian cities by the end of 2027.

Launch Date, Expected Price & Rivals

Maruti has not officially announced a specific launch date for the Wagon R Flex-Fuel, but the hatchback is anticipated to debut in the coming weeks. The entry-level model is expected to be priced from ₹5.5 Lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it against competitors like the Tata Tiago iCNG and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.
