Mercedes-Benz Plans To launch Mini version of the G-Class

Mercedes-Benz confirms a Mini and more affordable G-class SUV is on the way.

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed it plans to introduce a baby version of its popular G-Class, or G-Wagen. The Mercedes G-Class has always been something of an equally unwieldy and divisive beast.

The announcement came as part of an investor-relations presentation, in which the company outlined its strategy for growth and development across its portfolio.

The new car’s existence was initially confirmed following the reveal of the electric Concept CLA Class at the 2023 IAA Munich Motor Show. While, Several key questions remain unanswered, particularly regarding how closely this smaller version will resemble its beefy sibling.

Furthermore, in 2024 Schäfer confirmed that the upcoming model will exclusively feature an electric powertrain. Though he didn’t provide further details, it’s speculated that the Little G will follow in the footsteps of the electric CLA and share a number of powertrain components.

However, the Little G won’t ride on the MMA platform that will be used in the CLA. Instead, it will reportedly be underpinned by a different architecture and use “modules from Mercedes’ larger rear-driven cars, due to its need to offer true off-roading ability.”

Mercedes-Benz Mini G-Class Design

The mini G-Class will carry forward the old-school boxy design of the current G-Class. It is also expected to feature the traditional boot-mounted spare wheel.

The mini G-Class electric would look like a downsized G 580 electric SUV, featuring a similar shape and the signature G-Class design cues. “It will be instantly recognizable,” Källenius said during its announcement on September 3, 2023. As suggested by the teaser, it’ll have a squarish, boxy body with a flattish roof, a straight but mildly sloping hood, and a slightly raked tailgate with an external spare wheel, possibly secured with a stainless steel cap.

Interior

Talking about the interior, it will also likely draw heavily from the recently refreshed G-Class, blending luxury with high-tech features such as dual screens and an MBUX infotainment system, all within a similar boxy interior design.
