Jaguar Land Rover has appointed P B Balaji as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking the first time an Indian will lead the iconic British luxury carmaker. The announcement followed approval by the company’s Board of Directors on August 4, 2025.

Balaji will take over the role in November 2025 succeeding Adrian Mardell, who is retiring after a long 35 year tenure with JLR, including three years as CEO. Mardell will stay on for a transition period to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities

Transition Plan

Balaji will take charge in November 2025. He will succeed Adrian Mardell, who has chosen to retire after three years as CEO and a 35-year career with the brand. Mardell will continue to work with the company to ensure a smooth transition until his contract ends.

Board Approval And Selection Process

The search for a suitable candidate to lead the company had been ongoing for months. After careful consideration, the Board chose Balaji based on his experience and deep understanding of the business. N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors, and Tata Sons, praised Mardell for his contributions and expressed confidence in Balaji’s ability to lead the company forward.

Balaji’s Experience

Currently serving as Group Chief Financial Officer at Tata Motors Group, Balaji has over three decades of experience across the automotive and consumer goods industries. He has managed finance and supply chain operations at a global scale and worked in multicultural settings across Mumbai, London, Singapore and Switzerland.

Balaji is a graduate of IIT-Chennai with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM. His time at Tata Motors has seen him closely involved with the successful transformation of the company.

Balaji’s Vision

Upon confirmation of his appointment Balaji expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for the role. He said he has grown to know and appreciate the company and its globally respected brands over the past eight years. He emphasized working closely with the leadership team to take the business to greater heights.
