Generations: 11
First production year: 1979
The First Model, the 280 GE, Was Made On Request for the Shah of Iran.
Every G-Class Is Hand-Built in the Same Factory.
The “G” Stands for “Geländewagen” (or “cross country vehicle”)
The G-Class has been one of the longest-produced models in Mercedes-Benz’s history.
Before a G-Class can embark on off-road adventures, it takes more than 100 hours of manufacturing to build it from around 3,200 individual parts held together by around 400 screws, washers, and nuts. The G-Class is then painted with an average of 8 to 10 litres in one of the 39 available paint colours, applied in 4 to 6 coats.
The chassis is made of up to 3.4-millimetre-thick sheet steel, which makes it more suitable for tough off-road use than self-supporting bodies.
In 1990 Mercedes “split” the G-wagen family into two distinct branches: The aforementioned W461 catered to the down-and-dirty workhorse crowd, while the new W463 was the first iteration of the plush, big-baller “status” off-roader we know the G as today.

Four-Decade Old Car

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has existed for more than four decades since it was launched back in the 1970s.

There’s a G-Class 6×6

Yes, there is a 6-wheeled version of the G-Class available in the market. The G-Class 6×6 was jointly made by Mercedes-Benz and AMG for the Australian army back in 2007. A few years later, they introduced the civilian versions of the SUT (Sports Utility Truck).
The G-Class 6×6 is a pretty rare vehicle, and only 100 of them have been built between the years 2013 and 2015.

G-wagon ambulance

This is a fantastic G-Wagen ambulance that used to belong to the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport. Meanwhile the second image is of Italy and Switzerland where for example, if you slipped and broke your ankle help would arrive in the form of a G-Wagen.

Used by the Military over 40 Countries

Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has been used by the military in more than 40 countries. This data alone proves the reliability and toughness of this exclusive vehicle. Despite existing for a long time, this car is preferred by the military to navigate off-road conditions and mountainous terrains.

Mercedes G-Class - History

A development program rumbled through most of the seventies, including excursions to German coalfields, the Sahara desert, and the Arctic Circle. And Steyr-Daimler-Puch began hand-building the G in the same Graz factory they’re made in today, ready for its 1979 launch.
When it arrived on sale you could choose either a short (2400mm) or long (2850mm) wheelbase. The former came in two-door ragtop or wagon flavour, but the big ‘un was only available as a four-door wagon. You could also get both of the estates as windowless two-door vans, called Kastenwagen.
The G-Class remained true to its roots and featured the same squared-looking bodywork. Moreover, it still relied on the same body-on-frame construction that made it famous worldwide.
1979: The first G-Class models are shown to the press in southern France and the first models are the 240 GD, 300 GD, 230 G, and 280 GE.
1980: Pope John Paul II is chauffeured around in a G-Class on his first visit to Germany as pope.
1981: For the 280 GE and the 300 GD, air conditioning and other comfort features such as an adjustable rear seat and hardtop for the Cabrio version, including 22 exterior colors available for ordering.
1983: Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur drove the Rallye Paris-Dakar with a 280 GE and came in first place.
1985: As part of a model year change, the G-Class was greatly upgraded, including new differentials, central locking, and rpm meter.
1987: Freshened model changes included power windows, automatic antenna, luggage compartment cover, and larger fuel tank.
1989: W463 model chassis saw improved equipment and four powertrains – 250 GD, 300 GD, 230 GE, and 300 GE. Three body styles were available – Cabriolet, Station Wagon short, and also long.
1993: The 500 GE was the first V8 model in the G-Class. The 5-liter aluminum engine had 240 PS (237 hp) and it marked the first time the brand officially called it the “G-Class,” with model names G230, G300, G350 turbodiesel, etc.
1994: Disc brakes and driver airbag were added.
1998: G500 with 296 PS (292 hp).
1999: G55 AMG® was added to the lineup.
2001: At the IAA in Frankfurt, the G-Class received an improved interior and improved driving dynamics with ESP®, brake assistant, and ETS traction system.
2002: G-Class goes on sale as an official offering from Mercedes-Benz USA, including the G55 AMG®.
2004: World premiere of the G55 AMG® with a Kompressor aka supercharged engine with 469 hp.
2007: Updated interior cluster with four analog instruments.
2008: Introduction of the new 5.5-liter V8 engine, and in the USA, the G500 is changed to G 550.
2012: (MY2013 in the USA) completely new instrument cluster and center console as standard, with modern COMAND® infotainment, with mild exterior enhancements including LED daytime running lights.
2015: designo® Manufaktur program is available for G-Class. The G 63 AMG® 6×6 and the new G500 4×4 squared with portal axles demonstrate unmatched offroad capabilities.
2017: The 300,000th G-Class comes off the line in the Austrian factory Magna Steyr, which is a Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet, with many luxurious features.

Mercedes G-Class - Facts

  • The first prototypes were constructed not in the usual modelling clay but made from wood.
  • The fully synchronised transfer box was one of the few mechanical components not to be supplied by Mercedes and was developed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch.
  • Despite all the online rumours that the G-Wagen was invented by the Shah for the Iranian army, Mercedes’ own press material insists it was never designed as a military vehicle.
  • G-Class models sold in Austria and Switzerland were badged as Puch rather than Mercedes.
  • From July 1986 a special version of the 250GD was produced which was classified as being safe to use underground in mines.
  • Pope John Paul II used a G-Wagen Popemobile, initially a 230G then the injected 230GE. That clearly wasn’t enough for the petrolhead Pontiff who upgraded to the G500 in 2007.
  • The Popemobiles featured a rear floor raised by 400mm and a special climate control system to stop the Pope being fogged up inside his protective Plexiglass dome.
  • The relatively narrow 1700mm width of the G-Class was tailored to Alpine tracks.
  • In 1983 Paris-Dakar winners Jackie Ickx and co-driver Claude Brasseur made history when their 280GE completed a stage faster than a motorcycle.
  • The original W460 remained in production for military buyers after the introduction of the new model in 1990 and was given the production code W461.
  • Export models produced as CKD kits were given the production code W462.
  • In 2008 the Australian army ordered 800 of the 6×6 variant.
  • The G-Wagens used by the German armed forces are known by the name ‘Wolf’ – not to be confused with the uprated Land Rovers used by the British MoD.
  • The Peugeot P4 was based on the G-Wagen but used Peugeot engines and transmissions.
  • In 2022 the military W461 was replaced by a W464, based on the revised 2018 G-Wagen but retaining the rigid axle of the original as well as 24-volt electrics and heavy-duty chassis.

2024 Mercedes-Benz G-class Electric

Mercedes-Benz has plans for a new, electric version to bring the model in line with the rest of the brand’s electrification plans.
The EQG dutifully keeps the original G-Class’ upright shape intact.
Mercedes-Benz has not revealed the specifications of the EQG as it is currently in its pre-production form. The confirmed details include an electric motor on each axle, giving it four-wheel-drive capability. The car could return a range of 500km on a single full charge.
