Toyota Motors is scheduled to launch the Fortuner Diesel Hybrid in India next month. Production of the new Fortuner variant, this one with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and also the 2.8-litre diesel engine is currently underway.
A hit seller in India’s full-size SUV sector, the Fortuner is set to receive the improved fuel efficiency as well as the improved driving dynamics without compromising the SUV’s original levels of performance.
Mild-Hybrid Technology
The Facelift will feature a belt-integrated starter-generator (ISG) eliminating the need of the usual alternator. With the strength of having a 48V battery pack, the mild-hybrid configuration improves the engine performance at takeoff whilst encouraging smoother restarts, especially at traffic lights in cities.
The mild-hybrid system should improve fuel efficiency by a round 10 percent over the conventional diesel model, Toyota says. The addition of regenerative braking to the hybrid lineup is meant to improve overall fuel economy.
Performance and Off-Road Capabilities
Toyota has given it a guarantee whereby installation of a hybrid technology to Fortuner’ would not impact its off-road performance. The hydraulic system retains the SUV’s 700mm water wading height and powerful low-end torque making it a good fit for difficult off-road duties.
Global Availability
International markets already have access to the mild-hybrid Fortuner including Hilux derivatives. In 2021, Toyota came up with the first hybrid Fortuner model, taking off the market quite abruptly without any reason. The launch of the Fortuner Diesel Hybrid is the latest leap by Toyota to fit its full-size SUVs with hybrid technology in India.
Awaiting Further Details
To date Toyota has not hinted at the timing of launch, price and the exact specification of the Fortuner Diesel Hybrid for the Indian market. We still do not know how variants will change, what interior improvements will be made and how the exterior of the vehicle will be hidden differently.
The launch of the Fortuner Diesel Hybrid is slated to bring a major leap in a larger quest by Toyota to electrify its domestic infantry more broadly.
