Mercedes-Benz India has achieved a significant milestone, rolling out its 200,000th locally produced vehicle from its Chakan manufacturing facility near Pune.
Mercedes-Benz Group AG, marked the occasion by rolling out an EQS SUV from the production line.
The 200,000th car was rolled out by Dr. Jorg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management, Mercedes-Benz Group AG, in the presence of Santosh Iyer, MD & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, and Vyankatesh Kulkarni, Executive Director & Head of Operations.
Mercedes-Benz India took 19 years to produce its first 50,000 cars (1995–2014), then added 100,000 more in the next decade. In the past two years, the company has produced 50,000 cars, reflecting a sharp acceleration in production to meet the rising demand for luxury vehicles in the country.
Mercedes-Benz India’s Chakan plant has been a pioneer in local manufacturing. Notably, the Chakan plant was the first plant to manufacture the Mercedes-Maybach S500 outside of Germany in 2015. This production line was later expanded by including other models.
Mercedes-Benz produces 11 luxury models locally, offering the widest locally made luxury portfolio in India. This includes the C-Class, E-Class LWB, GLA, GLC, GLE, GLS, EQS, among others.
The plant has also been at the forefront of the luxury electric mobility transition, commencing local production of the EQS 580 Sedan in 2022. Mercedes-Benz also become the first manufacturer to start the localization of a second BEV in India, with the local production of the EQS 580 SUV.
Additionally, the facility has been powered entirely by renewable energy since 2022, aligning with Mercedes-Benz’s global sustainable manufacturing strategy.
The Company has invested approximately INR 3,000 crores (about $360 million) in its Indian manufacturing operations to date, including a fresh investment of INR 200 crores ($24 million) in 2024. This represents the highest investment by any luxury automotive manufacturer in India.
Mercedes-Benz maintains over 100 sales and service touchpoints across more than 50 Indian cities, the largest retail network among luxury carmakers in the country.
Commenting on the milestone, Santosh Iyer, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India stated, “The production facility has played a critical role in our success, allowing us to cater to the growing market demand for our products. We are committed to expanding our footprint in India and continuing our investments in this important market.”
