The pending Renault Boreal, a seven-seat SUV built on the Dacia Bigster platform, got a 3-star safety rating in the recent Euro NCAP crash tests. Expected to launch in India in 2026, the vehicle will fit two more rows of passengers and follow the design of the Renault Duster to win over buyers in the growing mid-size SUV sector.

Big on Size, Moderate on Safety: Renault Boreal's Euro NCAP Report Card Unpacked
| Feature | Score/Rating | Key Takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) | 27.7/40 (69%) | Solid front, shaky chest compression |
| Child Occupant Protection (COP) | 42/49 (85%) | Almost top marks; child-friendly build |
| Pedestrian Protection | 60% | Meh-zone: Average for urban pedestrian safety |
| Safety Assist Features | 57% | Decent tech, but misses critical extras |
| Overall Safety Rating | ★★★☆☆ (3 Stars) | Middle of the (Euro NCAP) road |
European New Car Assessment Program
The Dacia Bigster which will become the Renault Boreal for India, was tested and reported as performing the following:
- 69% of adult occupants are protected by this standard.
- Nearly all (85%) of car crashes happen for their child occupant safety.
- Safety of people on foot was given a priority of 60%.
- 57% of shoppers look for safety assist systems.
The testing gave the vehicle a three-star safety rating which is the same as the result for its five-seater equivalent in 2024.
Adult Occupant Protection scores stable yet Chest Protection rated Weak
The evaluation from Euro NCAP showed that the car’s front held up during a frontal offset crash and provided good protection for the knees and femurs of those in the front. The protection provided by the chest for the driver was rated low because of worries about compression. The driver and rear-seat passenger each had only marginal survival space in the full-width barrier test. It was in side impact testing that the SUV excelled, scoring all 10 points.
One important issue was that there was no protection on the opposite side of the moon. The car’s controls don’t address movement in the body or avoiding strikes to the head in side collisions.
All Child Safety Tests Gave High Marks
According to tests, the Boreal got an excellent result for child passenger safety, with 42 out of 49 points. There was strong impact resistance seen in both the frontal and side barrier testing. A button installed in the dashboard allows you to deactivate the front passenger airbag, so a child seat can be used facing the rear of the vehicle. There is no inbuilt child presence detection in the vehicle, but all approved child restraint systems can be fitted.
These cars include standard safety equipment
Among its basic features, the SUV has Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), reminders for seatbelts, lane support and monitoring for drowsy drivers. ADAS performance during the ADAS sensor tests was regarded as adequate with regard to vehicle detection. Yet, rear occupant detection is missing in the vehicle, along with advanced driver aids which has lowered their score.
The version of the Dacia Bigster in the test was MY2024, with a 1.8-litre petrol hybrid engine, six airbags and weighing 1,513 kg.
What it Means for the Indian Market?
When it goes on sale in 2026, the Renault Boreal will enter India’s growing market for SUVs with three rows. Even though the 3-star safety rating falls behind new standards of 4- and 5-star models, it ensures your vehicle fulfills basic safety guidelines and guards them well, especially for your child passengers.
Because the Boreal will be affordable, spacious and offer useful features, it could appeal to families who want a big SUV on a budget. Yet, buyers who want more protection may consider choosing other options.
