The Land Rover Defender is a four-wheel-drive off-road luxury 4x4 from British automotive company Jaguar Land Rover. The vehicle was launched on 10 September 2019 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Defender replaces the original Land Rover Defender (1983-2016).

Land Rover Defender: A Journey of Evolution Through the Decades

Land Rover Defender

The Defender has been a prominent name ever since it came out in the mid-1980s. It’s known for its off-roading mastery and the ability to almost go anywhere. In fact, the body shape didn’t change until the 2020 model, when an all-new Defender was introduced.

History

The Land Rover Defender (initially introduced as the Land Rover 110 / One Ten, and in 1984 joined by the Land Rover 90 / Ninety, plus the new, extra-length Land Rover 127 in 1985) is a series of British off-road cars and pickup trucks. They consistently have four-wheel drive, and were developed in the 1980s from the original Land Rover series which was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948. Following the 1989 introduction of the Land Rover Discovery, the term ‘Land Rover’ became the name of a broader marque, and thus no longer worked as the name of a specific model; thus in 1990 Land Rover renamed the 90 and 110 as Defender 90 and Defender 110 respectively. The 127 became the Defender 130.
The Defender debuted in 1990 with the new 200Tdi engine shared with the Discovery. It was uprated again to the 300Tdi engine and the L380 manual gearbox.

Land Rover Defender around the years.

From 1948 to 1958 , the Land Rover Series I ruled the roost. It was replaced by the Series II in 1958, and the latter would itself be replaced by the Series III in 1971.
From 1971 to 1985, the Land Rover Series III set the standard for luxury off-road SUVs.
In 1983, two years before the Series III was retired, the Land Rover 110 went up for sale. The two-door Land Rover 90 would follow just one year later, in 1984.
From 1983 to 1990, the 110 and the 90 are sold in the U.K. and elsewhere–but not in the states!
In 1990, the 110 and the 90 would both be given the Defender nameplate–its first use ever.
In 1993, the Defender 110 and the Defender 90 would go on sale for drivers near Rumson and Colts Neck, as well as elsewhere across the U.S.
In 1997, the Defender would leave the American market once more. However, it would continue its run in other locales all the way up until 2016.
The Land Rover 110 (the first Defender) also featured:
  • Permanent four-wheel drive, as featured in the old Range Rover
  • A two-speed transfer gearbox
  • A lockable center differential
  • Coil spring suspension
  • More luxurious interior features and appointments
QUEEN ELIZABETH AND LAND ROVER – The late Queen Elizabeth II and Land Rover had quite a history of their own. Land Rover had been an official supplier to the Royal Family since 1948, and for Queen Elizabeth the Defender was her model of choice. She took delivery of her first Defender in 1952, shortly after her coronation. Queen Elizabeth’s Defender was primarily used to driving private roads around the royal estates throughout her reign.
In 2001 the Defender entered the new millennium, gaining modern creature comforts such as electric windows, central locking and heated seats for the first time. But there was no question of the Defender going soft. In 1996, the Ministry of Defence placed an order for almost 8,000 military specification Defender XDs. The XD stood for ‘extra duty’.
The last of the old-school Land Rover Defenders to roll off the production line in 2016 was remarkably similar in design and concept to the original Land Rover launched in 1948.
After a run of more than 30 years, production of the Defender was completely shutdown in 2016. Land Rover went back to the drawing board and spent the next four years redesigning and retooling the model. The all-new Defender was released in 2020, and quickly became a favorite among drivers around the world.
